Queen Anne

Search Visit

Queen Anne belonged to the House of Stuart. Born in 1665, she ascended to the throne in 1702 and died in 1714. She was preceded as monarch by William and Mary and was succeeded by George I.

Anne was the second daughter of James II, then Duke of York, and his first wife, daughter of the earl of Clarendon. Like her elder sister Mary, she was brought up a member of the Church of England, to which she maintained a devotion throughout her life.

The Glorious Revolution placed her in the line of succession to the British throne. After the death of Mary II in 1694 and later William III in 1702, she ascended to the throne. The chief political events of her reign were the union of the Parliament of Britain with that of Scotland in 1707, and the War of the Spanish Succession, and the Duke of Marlborough's victory at Blenheim in 1704.

None of her children survived her, bringing the royal House of Stuart to an end.
