Elizabeth II

Search Visit

Elizabeth II belongs to the House of Windsor (Saxe-Coburg-Gotha). Born in 1926, she only became heir apparent to the throne after the abdication of her uncle Edward VIII and the ascension of her father, George VI, in 1952.

During World War II, Elizabeth, her parents, and her sister Margaret, remained in London, during the Blitz, earning them great affection from their countrymen. After the war, she married Philip Mountbatten, formerly Prince Philip of Greece, at Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947. She bore their first son, Charles, now Prince of Wales and heir apparent to the throne, on November 14, 1948.

Already one of England's longest reigning monarchs, Elizabeth will celebrate her golden jubilee in 2002.
