William and Mary

Search Visit

William III and Mary II were the only joint monarchs ever to reign in England. Mary had a claim to the throne, although she had been pre-empted by the birth of a son to James II. The result of this birth was the Glorious Revolution of 1688, which drove James from the throne, which was then offered to William and Mary. They reigned jointly only until 1694 when Mary died. William survived her until 1702.
