This 6,430-acre park, named for wealthy advertising entrepreneur and developer Barron Collier, is typical of Florida's famous Everglades region. Park land includes a 4,760-acre wilderness preserve, situated within its unique mangrove swamps. The scenic Blackwater River flows through the park, allowing access to the nearby Ten Thousand Islands and the Gulf of Mexico. Each day, a limited number of visitors are allowed to visit the preserve by canoe; a 13.5-mile paddle trip to the preserve offers primitive camping for overnight stays and boat tours down the river are offered by a park concession.
Full-facility camping is available for tents and RVs; other recreation includes fishing, boating and canoeing. A 6.5-mile hiking trail winds through pines and cypress swamps, close to local wildlife, and a self-guided nature trail with boardwalk system & observation platform overlooks a salt marsh. Exhibits of area plants & wildlife can be found at the Interpretive Center.
