Fort Pierce

Fort Pierce is located in St. Lucie County north of West Palm Beach between Vero Beach and Hobe Sound off of Highway 1 along the Indian River near the Atlantic seacoast. Fort Pierce is part of the Fort Pierce-Port St. Lucie, Florida metro area.

The City of Fort Pierce has been the center of St. Lucie County for 100 years. With a rich, colorful history, Fort Pierce evolved along the Indian River in the 1850's as a fort during the Seminole Wars and was named for its commander, Lt. Colonel Pierce. Built in 1883, the P.P. Cobb building, served as the county's general store and trading post.

As the years passed, Flagler's railroad in the early 1900's brought people to this area and to South Florida. Fort Pierce became a prominent town on the East Coast of Florida. During World War II, Fort Pierce Beach served as a Navy base.

Today, the historic downtown waterfront, with unique retail shopping, restaurants, marina, galleries and a 1923 performing arts theatre are popular attractions for residents and visitors.
