The African American Museum of the Arts, founded in 1994 by Irene D. Johnson, is the only museum in the area devoted primarily to African American and Caribbean American cultures and art. Its one-story facility houses a revolving gallery where visitors will find works of both established and emerging artists.
Six major annual exhibitions are held. The Museum is home to a permanent collection of more than 150 artifacts, including sculptures and masks, from countries of Africa. It also offers lectures, drama, dance, and reading and creative writing programs.
