Located on a hill overlooking the See Estuary, the religious center of Avranches has a close connection to the renowned site of Mont-St-Michel, which is situated on a rocky outcrop in the bay. While still some distance from the popular attraction, Avranches is a good base for visitors to the famous abbey. The abbey on Mont-St-Michel was built upon the direction of the Bishop of Avranches, who is said to have been touched by the Archangel Michael and instructed to build a church on the island. The skull of the bishop, bearing a hole believed to be a result of Michaels divine touch, is on display at the treasury of Avranches church of St-Gervais.
