Located at the mouth of the River Liane, Boulogne-sur-Mer is 18 miles SW of Calais, 28 miles from Folkestone, England (across the English Channel), and 181 miles NW of Paris. Rising above the port is the medieval quarter of Haute Ville, located within the old town walls. The Porte des Dunes opens onto a collection of 17th- to 19th-century buildings, including the Palais de Justice, Biblioteque and Hotel de Ville in the Place de la Resistance. Basse Ville is the modern section of town at the foot of the hill. The industrial zone, Capecure, lies on the west bank.
