The tiny hilltop town of Cassel is located l23 km. east of St-Omer. The narrow cobbled streets that radiate from the very Flemish Grand Place are lined with magnificent mansions and visitors can enjoy an unrivalled view over Flanders and beyond to Belgium from the Jardin Public (public gardens). Cassel also boasts 200 kms of hikers paths and cycle trails; a free map of walks in French Flanders can be obtained from the Tourist Office. Along the seven Roman roads leading out of the town, travelers can find chapels, 16th century altarpieces, the remains of feudal castle mounds and Flemish thatched cottages. Unique to the area are the Flemish "estaminets" (cafe/pub) that offer regional cuisine, decor of a bygone age and many variations on billiards and other traditional games, along with the sampling of the local beers.
