Situated 13 km SE of Compiegne, at Pierrefonds, the classic medieval Chateau de Pierrefonds dominates the landscape. Heavily restored by Viollet-le-Duc under the direction of Napoleon III, the chateau was transformed from ruins into an imperial residence complete with turrets, towers and a moat. Pierrefonds is served by daily bus service from the train station in Compiegne.
