Located on the right bank of the Vienne River, 396 km S of Paris and 93 km NE of Perigueux, Limoges is the capital of the Limousin region. Famous in the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance for its enamelwork, Limoges became known for its porcelain in the late 18th century and is still recognized today for the quality of the work produced there. The city itself consists of two parts: the ancient Cite, which developed around the Gothic Cathedrale St-Etienne, and the area around the chateau which is, today, the citys commercial center.
