The octagonal citadel of Neuf-Brisach, located east of Colmar and 4 km from the Rhine River near the German border, is military architect Vauban's masterpiece. Built between 1698 and 1707, the citadel is comprised of 48 equal squares with streets radiating from the central place d'Armes, all enclosed by symmetrical towers. The Musee Vauban, housed in the Porte de Belfort, includes a model of the town.
