Hinesville is located in Liberty County, of which it is the county seat, just southwest of Savannah between Jessup and Richmond Hill along Highway 38 near the Altamaha River in the Coast Region of the state. Situated on the southern portion of the Fort Stewart military installation.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 26,435, an increase of 4,839 since 1990.

Hinesville was named after Sen. Charlton Hines.
