Founded in 1873 as a military college, this university is today a military, liberal arts, and teachers college that is part of the public University system. One of the 4 colleges in the United States classified as military colleges by the Department of the Army, the school requires all male resident students to join its Corps of Cadets; other students are given the option to join.

The 225 acre campus is in a small town 60 miles north of Atlanta. Including residence halls there are 25 buildings.

Active fraternities, sororities, and over 50 clubs and organizations are on campus. Tours of the campus are available.
