The hospital was named "Malulani" (Protection of Heaven) by Queen Kapiolani and began operations in 1884. In 1927, the County of Maui assumed financial responsibility for Malulani Hospital. In 1952, a new 140-bed Central Maui Memorial Hospital, dedicated to Maui's fallen veterans, opened its doors. In 1956, with the closing of Paia, Puunene, and Lahaina Hospitals, all acute hospital care was consolidated under Central Maui Memorial Hospital. In 1963, the hospital changed its name to Maui Memorial Hospital and, in 1966, operations were transferred from the County of Maui's purview to the State of Hawaii. In 1998, the name of the facility was officially changed to Maui Memorial Medical Center. MMMC is licensed for 196 beds and now employs nearly 700 employees. In fiscal year 2000, there were 11,698 admissions, with 1,644 births; and a total of 58,560 patient days.
