Hawaii State Public Library System, serving an area of 1,200,000 residents, has a collection of 3,200,000 books and periodicals; in addition, there are 189,000 CDs, records, cassettes and other audio materials, as well as 58,000 video items, such as DVDs and VHS tapes. Internet terminals are available for use by the general public.

Staffing consists of 520 employees, of whom 160 are fully accredited librarians, plus volunteers. The system comprises one central library and 49 branch libraries, plus 4 bookmobiles. Annual expenditures on the library collection total $3,400,000. Patrons make 5,600,000 visits annually, and check out materials 7,800,000 times. Thirty-seven percent of all check-outs are children's materials.
