Search Kawaihae Hawaii

This visitor center is part of this National Historic Site marking the three stone heiaus. Two of them are on land and the third is submerged just offshore. King Kamehameha I had his men rebuild them in 1791.

A prophet told him to rebuild Puukolola Heiau and sacrifice his main rival on the Hawaii the Big Island so that the gods could fulfill his goal of conquering the Hawaiian Islands. He did and they did and he became ruler in 1810.

It is a short walk down to Puukolola Heiau and the smaller Mailekini Heiau, although the trail is closed on windy days. The visitor center is open 7:30am to 4pm and admission is free.
