At Craters of the Moon National Monument on the Snake River Plain, over 100 square miles of shiny black lava rocks serves as a reminder of the repeated volcanic eruptions and laval flows that occurred up to 17 million years ago.

Staff experts at the Sawtooth Science Institute unravel the complex geology of the Snake River Plain in a series of workshops held throughout the summer. They describe the connections between geysers in Yellowstone, the Island Park caldera just west of the park boundary, andhot spots on the Snake River Plain. And at nearby Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument, they demonstrate how the fossils of zebra-like horses and ground sloths represent a time when entirely different creates roamed the plain.

The institute is affiliated with Idaho State University and the Idaho Museum of Natural History.
