The pioneers who passed through Idaho on the Oregon and California trails between 1840 and 1860 observed the results of the catastrophic natural forces that created this area of Southern Idaho. Many saw potential in these bleak sagebrush plains for growing crops. By diverting the Snake River into canal systems, they made this area into one of the richest agricultural producers in the Northwest.
