Eldorado is known as the "City of Daffodils" and is located in southeastern Illinois in Saline County
just north of the Shawnee National Forest
and northeast of Harrisburg
, the county seat.
The town, founded by Judge Samuel Elder and Joseph Read, was origianlly named "Elder-Reado". Railroad sign painters eventually altered the name to what it is today.
The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 4,431, a decrease of 105 since 1990.
