Highland, founded by immigrants from Switzerland in 1831, is located in southwestern Illinois in Madison County between Troy and Vandalia along SR 160 just south of U.S. Highway 40 about 10 miles southeast of Highland Silver Lake and 20 miles northwest of Carlyle Lake.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 8,218, an increase of 672 since 1990. Local events include "Schweizerfest", held on the 1st weekend in June, "Kirchenfest" which is held the 4th weekend in August and "Fall Fest", held on the 1st weekend in October.
