Horseshoe Lake--Madison County

Search Granite City Illinois

The Madison County version of Horseshoe Lake in southwestern Illinois is a 1,200-acre oxbow-style lake formed in the floodplains of the Mississippi River when the river's channel shifted thus naturally impounding the remaining water. Due to its shallow 3-foot depth, the lake is considered as "old" because of the time required to fill it with silt and debris.

The lake serves as the anchor for 2,850-acre Horseshoe Lake State Park and contains such species of fish as bass, bluegill, buffalo, carp, channel catfish and crappie. Those wishing to go powerboating on the lake must abide by the 25 horsepower limit.
