The town of Kankakee is located in east central Illinois in Kankakee County (of which it is the county seat) south of Chicago along Interstate 57 on the banks of the Kankakee River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 26,456, a decrease of 1,085 since 1990.

The city is proud to display its turn-of-the-century street lights that mark the way through the winding streets of the Riverview Historic District. Gracious Victorian homes and English gardens along the river reminds visitors of a vastly different era than we know today.

The Kankakee River State Park is a green corridor that stretches for about 15 miles along the river just northwest of the city.

The city is the home of Kankakee Community College for those seeking to continue their education beyond the high school level, to retrain for a career shift or just from a general interest point of view.
