Monmouth Illinois 61462
It's billed as the "longest continuously running airport in Illinois"...and that it is! It was around Monmouth that some of the early barnstormers got their wings and took to the skies in their biplanes. Jonathan Livingston buzzed the barns around Monmouth, and they say Lindy (Charles Lindburg) made U.S. Mail stops here many years ago. Meanwhile, the tradition lives on with the 2,900 foot runway that can easily accommodate single and twin engine airplanes, not to mention an occasional corporate jet. And rumor has it that if you land at the airport and call Meling's Restaurant in town, they'll come out and pick you up and treat you to lunch-or at least get you to the restaurant! An airport attendant is on the radio (122.8 Unicom) 8am-5pm every day except Monday for airport advisory information.
