Built in 1860, this Italianate brick home was given to Ulysses S. Grant by the town of Galena (in northwest Illinois in Jo Daviess County) at the successful conclusion of the Civil War in 1865. The structure is characterized by its low-pitched roof over a basically square frame with balconies over the covered porches. The home was used by the Grants until his election to the Presidency of the United States in 1868.
Today, the house is managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency as the "U.S. Grant Home State Historic Site".
