Woodstock is located in northeastern Illinois in McHenry County (of which it is the county seat). The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 17,734, an increase of 3,366 since 1990.
The town has several events during the year including "Dick Tracy Days", a 5-day celebration held in mid-June honoring former resident Chester Gould, creator of the comic strip crime fighter. Among the activities are a children's cartoon art class, sidewalk chalk art, live music, food and craft vendors, a beer garden and more.
