Kankakee county is located in northeast Illinois south of Chicago and Will County on the Indiana state line. The name is derived from the Potawatomi language meaning "Beautiful River."
In its early history there was an influx of French-Canadians to the county (in 1851) led by Charles Chiniquy, a "renegade priest". He "claimed" to have as many as 6,000 followers in his congregation by 1852.
Attractions to the area include the Kankakee River, the inspiration for Kankakee River State Park, and educational opportunities including Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais and Kankakee Community College in the county seat of Kankakee.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 102,720, an increase of 6,465 over the 1990 census.
