Lake county is the northeastern-most county in Illinois and was spun off from McHenry County in 1839. It is bounded on the north by Wisconsin, Lake Michigan on the east, Cook County on the south and McHenry County on the west.
The original county seat of Burlington (now Libertyville) was moved to "Little Fort" two years later and renamed Waukegan--the Potawatomie Indian translation.
Lake county, as well as McHenry County, is blessed with the NE Illinois' Chain O' Lakes system. The chain includes Bluff Lake, Lake Catherine, Channel Lake, Fox Lake, Grass Lake, Lake Marie, Nippersink Lake, Petite Lake and Pistakee Lake with smallish Redhead Lake nestled in the southeast corner.
The county population on July 1, 1999, was 617,975, an increase of 101,557 over the 1990 census.
