Shelby County

Shelby county is located in central Illinois south of Decatur. The county is named for Isaac Shelby, an officer in the Revolutionary War serving in the Battle of King's Mountain, NC, and later as the first Governor of Kentucky.

The county is blessed with Lake Shelbyville, a man-made lake from the waters of the Kaskaskia River for irrigation and recreation.

Eagle Creek State Park near Findlay and Wolf Creek State Park near Windsor are situated on opposite sides of Lake Shelbyville.

On an historical note, the Thompson Mill Covered Bridge near Cowden is one of five remaining in the state.

The county seat is Shelbyville and the county population on July 1, 1999, was 22,505, an increase of 244 over the 1990 census.
