Vermilion county is located in eastern Illinois bordering the state of Indiana and was created in 1818. It is named for the Vermilion River. The Middle Fork of the Vermilion contains a 45-mile stretch that is "designated scenic"--the only such designation in Illinois.

The county seat is Danville and the county population on July 1, 1999, was 83,813, a decrease of 4,444 over the 1990 census. Danville is also known as a short stopping place on the "Trail of Tears" migration route for Native Americans in 1838-39. In addition, 12,000 acres of parks including Kickapoo State Park provide the area recreation.

The county has a proud agricultural tradition ranking in the Top-10 of all U.S. counties in the production of soybeans.
