Warren county was created in 1825 but it wasn't until 1830 that the final boundaries were set.

The county is located in western Illinois, separated from the Mississippi River by Henderson County. It is named for Gen. Joseph Warren who was killed in the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775.

The county seat is in Monmouth, home of Monmouth College which was founded in 1853 by Scottish Presbyterian pioneers. Monmouth is also the birthplace of Wyatt Earp, the famous lawman.

The county population on July 1, 1999, was 18,931, a decrease of 250 over the 1990 census.
