Wayne county is located in southern Illinois between Jefferson County and Edwards County. Interstate 64 skirts its southern boundary.
The county was created in 1819 but its final boundaries were set in 1824 when a northern portion of the county was ceded to Clay County. It is named for "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a General in the Revoultionary War who later battled Native Americans in the Northwest Territory.
The county seat is Fairfield and the county population on July 1, 1999, was 16,967, a decrease of 274 over the 1990 census.
Outdoor enthusiastis flock to Sam Dale Conservation Area near Johnsonville to enjoy the 200-acre lake and surrounding recreational area.
