In 550 AD, St. Columbfounded a monastery here on a site believed to have been granted by M. Kervaill, King of Ireland. The Book of Kells, perhaps the oldest copy of the Christian Gospels still in existence, dates to the 6th century. In 1541 the Roman Catholic Church removed the Book from the monastery at Kells for protection, and it was later given to Trinity College in [dublin] for study and safekeeping. CODE left
