Organized in 1871, the county seat, Columbus is located in Cherokee County in the Southeast Regionof the state, at the junctions of highways US69 and K-96. Pop. 3268, Elev. 910 feet.

It is a nice size town, large enough to have a hospital, 24-hour convenience stores, and familiar fast food, and small enough to feel comfortable. The largest employer locally is Ace Electric. The main square in Columbus has many ornate 1880s buildings and an active retail area. It is a nice place to explore; the Chamber of Commerce has tour maps.

Special Events - Columbus has a Hot Air Balloon Regatta as part of its Columbus Day Festival in October. The town also hosts a Carnegie Library, a historical museum and a city park with a Frisco Caboose & 3 Wye Switch and There's a beautiful stone bath house at the swimming pool in the southern part of town. For those who enjoy golf, Columbus Country Club - 9-hole golf course is East of Columbus on K96. The Neosho River and Lightning rivers are nearby.
