Founded 1887, The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was about 311, a decrease of 32 since 1990.

Elev. 1499 feet. Courtland is located in Republic County, in the North Central Region of the state and is west of Belleville, along US Hwy 36. This community is near Lovewell State Park and the Pawnee Indian Village Museum. The Republican River is about six miles to the west of town. In addition to two historical museums, the High Banks Hall of Fame is also in Courtland. The Belleville Midget Nationals car races are held every August at the Belleville High Banks dirt track.
