Founded: 1872 Ellinwood is located in Barton County, in the South Central Region of the state. Pop.: 2,329 (1990) and 2,164 (2000). Elev. 1800 feet.
A short distance north of the Arkansas River. Highway 56 and the SantaFe railroad pass through town. On the Old SanteFe Trail, the trail that played a crucial role in the westward expansion of America, and was an important highway for commerce and cultural exchange. Ellinwood reflects it's German heritage by the architecture of the Main Street buildings. The Underground Tunnels of created during the town's early period remain of greatest interest to tourists.
Ellinwood is situated in the middle of the Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira Wildlife Refuge, both natural wetlands that attract nature lovers and hunters.
