Located in the South Central Region of the state, in Harvey County Halstead is east of Hutchinson on the banks of the Little Arkansas River near Newton. Halstead is part of the Wichita, Kansas metro area, and located on the historic Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe R. R.

Swiss and German Mennonites immigrated to Kansas from Russia from 1874 - 1979. They settled in Harvey County and founded Halstead where they built a flourmill by the Arkansas River.

Halstead has several buildings and sites that are on the National Historic register, including the US Post Office, (Kansas Post Offices with Artwork, 1936--1942).
