Junction City is located in the Central Region of the state, in Geary County (of which it is the county seat) and situated along the banks of the Kansas River. Junction City is south of Fort Riley Military Reservation between Salina and Manhattan along Highway 18 and near Milford Lake and Geary State Lake & Park. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 16,970, a decrease of 3,672 since 1990.

A historically signifigant Kansas town, nearby is the First Territorial Capitol of Kansas and the Kansas State University - Fort Riley and other historically signifigant military sites.
