The general flow of the Marais des Cygnes River Drainage Basin is to the east. Located in the East Region of Kansas, and comprised primarily of six counties. The counties are; Osage County, Franklin County, Miami County, Anderson County, Linn County and Bourbon County.

The Marais des Cygnes River served as a route for 18th century fur trappers heading west. The nationally historical and famous Chautauqua Assemblies were held near the banks of the Marais des Cygnes River.
