Pratt is located in Pratt County (of which it is the county seat) west of Wichita. Situated between Kingman and Greensburg along US Highway 54 and on the banks of the South Fork of the Ninnescah River. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 6,525, a decrease of 162 since 1990, with an elevation of 1890 feet.

Organized constitutionally in 1879 and Named in memory of Caleb Pratt, Second Lieutenant of Company D, First Kansas Infantry, killed in action August 10, 1861 at Wilson's creek, Mo. The town of Pratt is surrounded by the flat praire, which is populated with producing oil wells.
