This community is located in the Northwest Region of the state, in Logan County and was the original county seat. The town was Founded: 1865. Pop: 29 Elev. 2964 feet. Russell Springs has a beautiful site on the ridge that forms the north side of the valley of the Smoky Hill River. You can see the impressive old courthouse, that is now the Butterfield Trail Museum, for many miles to the south.

Russell Springs was the Eaton stop on the Butterfield Overland Dispatch stage line, which was created on the Smoky Hill Trail. The stage line ran until the Kansas Pacific Railroad was built. Travelers on the Butterfield Trail always made the natural springs in the area a watering place, calling them "Russell's springs."
