The general flow of the Verdigris River Drainage Basin is to the southeast. Located in the Southeast Region of Kansas, and comprised primarily of seven counties. The counties are; Greenwood County, Elk County, Chautauqua County, Woodson County, Wilson County, Montgomery County and Labette County.

The minor river basins or watersheds in the Verdigris River Drainage Basin are comprised of the Canary, Elk, Fall and the two branches of the Verdigris River. Most rivers have more than one branch.

The lowest place in the state is claimed by two points, one at Kansas City, the mouth of the Kansas River, and one near Coffeyville where the Verdigris River crosses the southern boundary into Oklahoma, (Select this link to view the Oklahoma Verdigris River page), each with an elevation of approximately 700 feet above sea level.
