Kentucky Coal Mining Museum is located in the heart of the Appalachian coal fields in a former coal camp town. It is housed in the International Harvester Commissary. It's structure was rebuilt in the 1930's and was operated as the company store until International Harvester closed the last mine in the 1950's. The old theater, which is located near the museum, was built by the coal company to provide entertainment to the community. The School House Inn, which at one time served as a high school and elementary school for coal camp children, was built in 1926 by the Wisconsin Steel Corporation. It is near the museum.
