Lexington

Lexington is located in Fayette County and it is the county seat. The city is located in east-central Kentucky, about 80 miles east of Louisville. The mean average temperature in Lexington is 54.9 degrees and the annual precipitation is 45.68 inches. The city and the Bluegrass region enjoy four distinct seasons that include cool plateau breezes and moderate nights in the summer.

Lexington is one of the oldest cities west of the Allegheny Mountains. It is said that the name was given to the settlement by pioneers who had just received news of the Battle of Lexington. The Kentucky legislature held its first sessions in Lexington in 1792, the year that Kentucky separated from Virginia.

The area is noted for tobacco farming and thoroughbred racing horses. General Electric Company, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, U.S.A. and United Parcel Service also are present, among others, in Lexington. Many attractions are equestrian-oriented. Lexington also is the home of the University of Kentucky.
