State Eastern Star Shrine

Search La Grange Kentucky

Located on Washington Street, this was the home of Dr. Rob Morris, founder of the Order of the Eastern Star, from 1862 until the time of his death in 1888. Morris was a lawyer, lecturer, educator and instructor in Masonry, becoming a Master Mason in 1849. The now-worldwide organization was formed due to Morris's interest in the ability of female relatives of Master Masons to share in the benefits of the great fraternal Order to which he belonged. The first General Grand Chapter was organized in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1876.

The LaGrange homesite is now the property of the Grand Chapter of Kentucky, and maintained as a shrine in honor of the Order's Master Builder. Items displayed include original furnishings, some of Dr. Morris's personal belongings and memorabilia, and other relics. Morris is buried in the LaGrange cemetery, where a marble shaft was erected in tribute to his memory and legacy. The house can be visited Monday through Friday.
