Natchitoches is the oldest town in the Louisianna Purchase, located in Natchitoches Parish (of which it is the parish seat) within the Crossroads Region, between Shreveport and Alexandria along Highway 1 near Natchez, the Red River, and Sibley Lake.

The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 16,713, an increase of 104 since 1990.
