The commune of Bascharage, population 6,597, is located is the southwest corner of Luxembourg, 6 kilometers northwest of Esch-sur-Alzette and 6 kilometers from the border on the road connecting Luxembourg City with the French City of Longwy. Bascharage is best known for beer and gems. The beer is brewed at the National Brewery (Brasserie Nationale); it enjoys immense local popularity, though distribution is mostly confined to Luxembourg. The gems are cut at the Luxembourg Gem Stone-Cutting Workshop; in addition to a feature installation on minerals, the master cutters may often be observed while they work.

Bascharage (population 4553), Hautcharage, and Linger are boroughs within the commune of Bascharage.

The N31 and the A13 roadways coming up from France pass through Linger then turn southeast; the E44 splits off and continues northwest through the center of Bascharage, towards Luxembourg City.
