Springfield is located in Hampden County 53 miles W of Worcester in western Massachusetts along Interstate 90 on the banks of the Connecticut River near the Connecticut state line. Site of one of the first motorcar plants in the US in 1895. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 148,144, a decrease of 8,839 since 1990. Springfield is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts metro area.
