Visitors will enjoy a look at early 19th-century family life at "Woodlawn," the 300-acre estate of Colonel John Black; the mansion retains its original appearance, including carriage house, carriages and sleighs used by the former occupants. The mansion, circa 1824-28, enjoys a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.
Inside, rooms contain museum-quality art, antiques and historical pieces, including a miniature of George Washington presented to Mary Black's father after the end of the Revolutionary War. Fine imported furnishings include Queen Anne, Chippendale, Jacobean and Sheraton-style pieces; a large butler's pantry is stocked with beautiful china and glassware such as Spode, Staffordshire, and Waterford. Guided tours of the mansion are offered Mon-Saturday, June through mid-October. Other highlights of the estate include the Formal Gardens, a lush Tea Lawn, horse trails originally used to exercise the family horses, and Gift Shop.
