Baraga is in Baraga County, and in the Northern Region. Baraga is located south of Hancock between Hancock and Crystal Falls along US Highway 41 near L'Anse Bay and Lake Superior. Situated in Michigan's Upper Peninsula region.
Baraga get's its name from Bishop Frederick Baraga. In 1875 Baraga became a county. Origianally Baraga was part of Houghton County.
Because of the overwellming amount of beaver, fox, wolf and deer pelts, early trading posts were established. Along with the abundance of wildlife, lumbering, mining, and agriculture attracted settlers.
